Defensive wins championships, and it has been a while since Georgia Tech has won a championship with defensive play. 2014 3-star commit Michael Preddy could develop into becoming a key to ending that wait.
Preddy is a man-sized 6-5, 250 lb defensive end from Charleston, SC. (Porter Gaud School). A lot of excellent talent has come out of South Carolina for the Yellow Jackets, as well as many other top-tier FBS schools.
In Preddy’s senior season at Porter-Gaud High School his team didn’t fare too well against other top teams in the state. The Porter-Gaud football team only went 4-8 with a 4-5 record in their division. By the end of the season they had dropped all the way down to a #130 ranking in the state.
Although his team may not have been very successful, Preddy impressed enough people to get where he wanted to go. He received offers from Louisville, Wake Forest, Rutgers and of course, Georgia Tech, where he verbally committed in July.
In his junior year (2012), Preddy had 94 total tackles and 19 sacks, putting up similar numbers in his senior season. Preddy is ranked #113 at his position on ESPN’s Recruiting Rankings, and is not ranked by Rivals.com, who have him listed at the #21 recruit out of South Carolina.
Although he lacks a lot of polish and some of the ideals that are looked for in a top defensive end, his size and body strength give him a good foundation. More than likely he would be redhshirted in his freshman year, and given some time to work on his footwork, and to build some additional strength and speed to his game.
This Preddy kid has a massive frame and with the right coaching he’ll provide some great depth at the end position, and could possibly bulk up to play an inside tackle position as well.
