Once upon a time there was actually hope in this game for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (12-12, 3-8 ACC). Trae Golden gave it a go with his bum groin, Robert Carter Jr. returned from his meniscus injury, and Georgia Tech looked like they were going to compete. But the Virginia Cavaliers (19-5, 10-1 ACC) turned their game up and beat up on the Jackets 64-45 at McCamish Pavilion.
It is possible that Brian Gregory‘s squad hit a wall in the second half and that is why they ended up getting run off the court for the final 7:35 seconds of the game, but honestly it was more about how Virginia turned up their defensive pressure and put the clamps down on any kind of Yellow Jackets’ scoring chances. The game was tied at 44-44 at the 7:35 mark, and the Cavaliers went on a 20-1 run to close the game out.
Malcolm Brogdon has been a force of late for the Cavaliers and continued to be that with his 14-point and nine rebound performance. Joe Harris chipped in 11 points and forward Anthony Gill was solid for the Cavs’ going 4 of 5 from the floor for 11 points to go along with six rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets simply got shut down after a strong first half. Daniel Miller was a stat stuffer in this game with nine points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots. Chris Bolden, who started off the game hot in the first half, finished with 13 points. The Jackets’ needed to tighten up their free throw shooting as a team, shooting a putrid 3 of 13 from the charity stripe for the game. They shot 36 percent from the floor overall.
The good news going forward for the Jackets is that they do have more bodies to rotate with the return of Robert Carter Jr. Also, Trae Golden was a gamer and played through, as Cheers bartender Sam Malone would say, “his groin, git git, groin, git git, groin injury”. But since they are still not at full strength, Coach Gregory will be looking for others to raise their level of play. The Jackets will be looking to get back in the win column when the Boston College Eagles coming in.
