For all the bad that has happened to Georgia Tech (13-12, 4-8 ACC) this season, at the very least there has been Daniel Miller. The big redshirt senior center was the Yellow Jackets’ main weapon, putting up 13 first-half points on the way to an 18-point game in a 74-71 win over the Boston College Eagles (6-18, 2-9 ACC).
It was a tight, back-and-forth game, with the Georgia Tech bigs-Miller, Kammeon Holsey and Robert Carter, Jr.–doing the bulk of the work, but it was the streaky Marcus Georges-Hunt who came through with a last second 3-point shot to put the Jackets up for good.
Georges-Hunt, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, was largely ineffective for most of the game but came on strong late in the second half, scoring seven points in the last 1:09 of the game.
One of the unsung heroes of this game was point guard, Corey Heyward, who was filling in for the injured Trae Golden. It wasn’t Heyward’s stat line that jumped out, but it was his active effort in the game, including assisting Georges-Hunt on the game-winning shot (one of Heyward’s five assists on the game).
The Jackets didn’t have their best game defensively, only coming up with two blocks and forcing just five turnovers, but it was good enough to keep them close through the entire game. The one thing the Jackets defense didn’t have an answer for was BC guard, Oliver Hanlan, who put up 21 points, to lead all scorers, and kept the Eagles in the game from start to finish.
Georgia Tech finished the game with a 36-19 rebounding edge over the Eagles, a testament to how hard the three big men were working on the glass. Kammeon Holsey led the Jackets in boards with nine (4 def, 5 off).
This is only Tech’s second ACC home win, but keeps the Jackets over .500 for the season and keeps them out of the ACC cellar. Next up, the no. 8 Duke Blue Devils come marching into McCamish. Tip-off scheduled for 9:00pm on Feb. 18th.
