Finally, the outcome equaled the effort, as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (14-16, 5-12 ACC) got the big payoff with an upset of the No.7 Syracuse Orange 26-4, 13-4 ACC) 67-62 in the Carrier Dome.
This is the game that Georgia Tech needed to be their confidence booster. This is the game that Brian Gregory could use to look his team in the eyes and say that their season is not over yet and that it has just begun.
Georgia Tech got solid performances from their key people to pull off this upset against the heavily favored Orange. Trae Golden finished with 16 points and hit six straight crucial free throws to seal the deal on this win. Daniel Miller, Robert Carter Jr., and Kammeon Holsey all showed up tonight as well.
Miller stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting, to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and six blocks. Robert Carter contributed 12 points and nine boards, and Kammeon Holsey showed up with nine points on 3 of 4 from the floor.
Though the Jackets had a hard time stopping All-ACC player C.J. Fair, who finished with 28 points and eight boards, and stud Freshman, Tyler Ennis, who had 18 points and seven assists in this game, the Jackets were able to hold Syracuse’s offense overall to 39% shooting from the floor. Jim Boeheim’s club came into this game struggling on offense lately, averaging 58 points in their previous eight contests.
Georgia Tech needed this win. They have worked really hard all season and all the fans and watchers of Yellow Jackets basketball are really proud of the team tonight. However, they need to put a cherry on top of this win by beating Virginia Tech in their final regular season matchup before they attempt to run the gauntlet of the ACC tournament. This win over Syracuse could propel the Jackets into a good showing in Greensboro starting on March 12th.
