With the Yellow Jackets coming off a massive upset of #7 Syracuse, coach Brian Gregory has to be sure to keep his team hungry and focused to avoid a loss to a lesser opponent. That is going to be the challenge for Georgia Tech Saturday when they take on the Virginia Tech Hokies.
It’s been pretty miserable in Blacksburg on the basketball front, with the Hokies bringing up the rear in the ACC conference standings. VPI has lost 15 of their last 16 contests, with the lone win coming against the Miami Hurricanes.
The Hokies are led by 6-foot-7 Senior forward, Jarell Eddie, who averages 13.4 points and 5.4 boards per game. What is a strange anomaly about Jarell Eddie is that his three-point percent (37.8%) is higher than his overall percentage from the field (35.7%). Needless to say that maybe the Jackets need to guard Mr. Eddie a little bit tighter when he is shooting from deep. 6-foot-1 Sophomore guard, Adam Smith, is the second leading scorer for the Hokies at 11 points per game and shoots a meager 38.4 % from the floor. Va. Tech overall shoots a dismal 40.7% from the floor which is the worst team field goal percentage in all the ACC.
The Jackets seriously do have an opportunity to go into the ACC Tournament on somewhat of a mini roll. Tech is truly superior to Virginia Tech in all phases of the game. The biggest challenge for them is going to be avoiding the let down. But playing on their home court for the last time this season, you can be sure that the Yellow Jackets will be looking to get a blowout win on Senior Day to close out the regular season.
This is also going to be Daniel Miller‘s final regular season game at McCamish Pavilion. The fifth-year senior has improved every year that he has taken the court for Georgia Tech, and will be looking to go out with a huge win on campus for his club. Trae Golden, also a senior, will be playing his final game at Tech as well. Though he transferred from Tennessee, his contribution this season to the Tech hoops team has been hugely important.
Both Miller and Golden came up big in the upset win over the Orange, with Miller scoring 15 points and Golden scoring 16. They will surely be amped up as they play their final games in front of the Tech student body.
It would be nice for both of these players to come off the court Saturday with a win before they go to Greensboro for the ACC tournament.
