As we inch closer and closer to the 2014 NFL Draft, the Georgia Tech players who entering the draft have to be feeling the crunch. Last month, we took a look at what could be in store for Jeremiah Attaochu‘s draft day, now we will look at another Yellow Jacket who will probably be hearing his name called, defensive back Jemea Thomas.
Thomas, who will probably be drafted as a safety, has some perceived weaknesses to overcome, including his size. At 5-foot-9 and just 192 pounds, many teams may initially pass on Thomas, given his obvious matchup problems against some of the NFLs bigger wide receivers and tight ends.
But teams who are looking to add some depth in the secondary (we’re looking at you Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys) might do well to give Jemea Thomas a hard look.
Although his size does limit him in terms of a 3-down safety, he could be ideal in nickel situations. He’s delivers blows that are much bigger than his size, but without losing control. Manning the front end of the secondary and keeping short passing routes from breaking into big gainers might be a perfect fit.
Despite his slightness in length, Thomas has an uncanny knack for being able to break on balls thrown in front of him and cause deflections and, in many cases, interceptions. A 4.45 forty-yard dash isn’t blazing speed, but it’s plenty fast enough for a free safety used in passing downs. He has the type of attitude, as well as durability that make him very worthy of a draft pick by just about any team.
Most NFL draft scouts have him graded as a late draft pick, sixth or seventh round, and that’s probably fairly accurate. But it would be hard to believe that some team isn’t going to recognize the amount of talent and strengths that he has, and would let him fall out of the draft completely.
If Thomas ends up becoming a UDFA, it would be a shock.
