Georgia Tech Ladies have a date with Sparty in ACC-Big 10 Challenge

Georgia Tech women’s basketball is coming off a pretty solid 2013-14 season that saw them make the NCAA Tournament and finish with a record of 20-12. Though the Jackets were ousted in the first round of the tourney by LSU, coach MaChelle Joseph’s squad has a lot to build on going into this season.

One of the big games every season is the ACC-Big 10 Challenge game, which will have the Lady Jackets headed to Lansing, Mi. to take on the Michigan State Spartans on December 4th. This is going to be the second time that Tech has faced Sparty in the annual challenge between these two conferences.

The Georgia Tech Ladies are 6-1 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge including a perfect 4-0 at home. Tech’s only blemish in the challenge was a loss to Purdue in 2013-14. However, the ladies have slayed Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa to collect their six wins.

Last time Georgia Tech and Michgan State hooked up on December 8, 2008, the Yellow Jackets Jackets easily handled the Spartans 70-57. Overall in the history of the Georgia Tech ladies program, the Jackets are 12-5 versus Big Ten competition.

Though the Jackets lost Tyaunna Marshall to the WNBA’s New York Liberty this year, MaChelle Joseph is still going to have some firepower to hit the 2014-15 season with. ACC All-Freshman selection and four-time ACC Player of the Week,  Kaela Davis,  is going to bring her scoring punch to the floor for Tech as a sophomore. Davis dropped 18.6 points per game last year and will more than likely up that average this year.

Coach Joseph’s club has won 20 games or better seven times in the eight years that she has been at the helm. Last year in the ACC the ladies finished 9-7.  Hopefully a win in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge will vault the Georgia Tech women’s squad into bigger and better things for 2014-15. This team shows some promise going into this year and will be a team to follow all season long.
