Three Georgia Tech Ladies To Compete in the European Basketball Championships

Three members of MaChelle Joseph’s Yellow Jackets Women’s Basketball squad are going to be competing in the U20 European Basketball Championships for their respective countries starting July 3rd.

Two Lady Yellow Jackets will be competing in Division A of the U2o European Championship in Udine, Italy.  Sophomore Katarina Vuckovic from Smederevo, Serbia will play for her Serbian squad when they take on the Slovak Republic, Sweden and Ukraine in their Group C matchups. Serbia will face the Slovak Republic first in that group starting on July 3rd.

Vuckovic won a bronze medal with Serbia in the U18 European Basketball Championships in 2013. In the FIBA U19 World Championships her Serbian team finished in eighth place with Vuckovic logging 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds during that event.

Also playing in Division A of the U20 European Championships is freshman Antonia Peresson out of Pordenone, Italy. Peresson will be playing along with the rest of Team Italy in Group D against The Netherlands, Poland and Belarus. Italy is slated to start group play against The Netherlands on July 3rd.

Peresson in the U18 European Championships averaged 7.4 points , 3.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game for Italy while shooting 37.5% from the floor. She also played for Italy in the U17 European Championships and averaged 6.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.

Rounding out the three Yellow Jackets competing in the U20 European Championships is freshman Simina Avram who will be playing for her native Romania in Division B.  Romania will play against Portugal on July 3rd.

Avram, who hails from Bosrov, Romania, played for her nation in the U18 European Championships and dropped 1.5 points and 2.7 rebounds on the stat sheet. She also played a tournament high 21 minutes against Poland and scored a tournament-high four points against Greece. In the U20 European Championships last year, Avram averaged 4.2 points and 2.8 boards per game for Romania.  Against Israel, Avram was a perfect 5 for 5 from the floor in logging her 10 points and she also grabbed a team high six rebounds against Bulgaria.
