Georgia Tech sophomore Cole Fiegel is having a pretty good summer for sure. Last weekend the rising Georgia Tech tennis player won an ITA Summer Circuit singles title by defeating Florida State’s Grayson Golden 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10 -6 ).
Florida State’s Golden was ranked No.2 going into the ITA Summer Circuit Singles Title match, but the sixth seeded Fiegel cared less about his seeding and took home the championship.
Fiegel was making a habit of sending Seminoles home in Tallahassee. After having an opening-round bye, Fiegel took out Florida State’s Dylan McCormick in emphatic fashion 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 32. Then after defeating Brett Landau from UNC Asheville 7-5, 6-4, Fiegel found time to take out another Florida State student in Terrance Whitehurst by beating him 7-5, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.
Just for good measure Fiegel added a Florida Gator to his list of wins by defeating Florida’s Josh Wardell 6-1 in the opening set before Wardell retired. That win is what sent him to the Finals.
Cole Fiegel had a 20-14 record in singles competition and a 12-6 record playing doubles last year making him the Yellow Jackets’ top winner. Fiegel was also 6-5 in ACC play last year.
The ITA is made up of nine regional circuits and has four open tournaments that are played in July leading up to the ITA/USTA National Summer Championship in Bloomington, Indiana.
The ITA provides college players a way to play all year round in organized events. The main reason for the ITA is to offer a platform for freshman and other collegiate players to play tennis during the summer months. The ITA also attempts to make sure that they are not doing anything to ruin these players’ NCAA eligibility. Therefore all ITA events played in the Summer Circuit are categorized as “open”, so anyone can compete in these events.
