The Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball Team is going to be severely tested in their nonconference schedule.
Brian Gregory’s club has to open up their season against the Georgia Bulldogs and also has dates with Northwestern,Vanderbilt and Dayton, just to name some of the squads they are up against before league play.
Now Georgia Tech knows who their opponent will be to open up tournament play in the Orlando Classic that takes place November 27-30. The Jackets will be squaring off against the Marquette Golden Eagles out of the Big East.
The bracket that Tech has drawn for the Orlando Classic is tough all the way through. Georgia Tech is grouped with the aforementioned Marquette, Big Ten and national power Michigan State, and Rider University out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Marquette is going to be a tough match-up for the Jackets. The Golden Eagles are under new leadership with their former head coach Buzz Williams moving on to Virginia Tech, and longtime Duke assistant coach, Steve Wojciechowski, taking over as the new head coach.
“Wojo” should be pretty familiar with Brian Gregory and his style of play after sitting alongside Mike Kryzewski the last few years and watching Duke take on Georgia Tech.
This bracket could really get interesting if the Yellow Jackets advance to take on Michigan State as well. Brian Gregory would be pitted against his former colleague Tom Izzo.
Gregory was an assistant under Izzo from 1999-2003, and was on the bench with Izzo when the Spartans, led by ” The Flintstones” (Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson, and Charlie Bell), won the National Title.
The Yellow Jackets and Golden Eagles will be hooking up for the first time since 1977. In that game Marquette, who was coached by the legendary Al McGuire, defeated a Dwayne Morrison coached Georgia Tech squad 63-45.
Historically Georgia Tech and Marquette are tied 3-3 in this series which dates all the way back to 1926.
The Orlando Classic is a basketball lovers dream. The tournament will start on Thanksgiving at Noon ET with the Santa Clara Broncos taking on the Tennessee Volunteers with all tournament games being televised on ESPN2.
The Georgia Tech/Marquette game will be televised on ESPN2 at 8:30 PM on November 27th.
