Georgia Tech Football: What Step Durham Brings To The Team

Step Durham was a USMC All-American and Florida Times Union Super 11, Super 24 and Super 75 for the State of Florida.

He made history at Atlantic Coast High School by being the first freshman player to play on the varsity team. He started every game for Atlantic Coast during his four years as a student. Aside from football, he also played basketball and was active in track and field.

Durham achieved the following accomplishments while playing at Atlantic Coast High School:

  • Big County Prep’s 2014 Single Player,
  • Ranking as #1 Cornerback in Florida,
  • 2012 Florida’s Sunshine Prep’s Top 20,
  • NCSA’s c/o 2014 Watch List,
  • 2012 IMG All-Madden Team
  • 2012 FACA All-District Team,
  • SB Nation 2014 All-ACC Recruit’s Team,
  • 2013 FACA All-District Team, 2012 & 2013  (two time) All Gateway Conference Team
  • 2013-2014 Atlantic Coast High School Team MVP,
  • 2013-2014 All-First Coast Football Team
  • 2013-2014 All- State Football Team.

Outside of athletics, Durham graduated from Atlantic Coast High School with a 3.75 GPA, and was selected as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

Off the field Durham is very active in his community.  He is a youth leader at his local church, and he spends valuable time mentoring young kids and helping the homeless.

Durham is the first four-star recruit the Yellow Jackets have recruited in the past two years.  He has blazing 4.4 40-meter speed on paper, but if you watch him on the field he plays faster, as you will see in the video below where he chases down a runner, and prevents what would have been a touchdown for the opposition.

He has a prototypical build for a corner, but he can also be utilized as a receiver.  Also, Durham has excellent hands for a defender, and his coverage skills are amazing making smart reads in both man and zone coverages.

He’s not afraid to throw his 5-foot-11, 190 pound frame around, and he doesn’t shy away from contact.  Durham provides solid run support and makes the big hits.  He’s quick at identifying a play, and his reaction time is top notch for a college freshman.

When beaten on a play, Durham doesn’t simply give up, he utilizes his speed to quickly recover and stop the play.

Durham’s most impressive features are his agility (4.3 cone) , vertical jump (40 inch), and his footwork.  He will contest any pass thrown in his direction, and on rushing downs he is very difficult to burn once he locates the ball.

His discipline level is another important feature.  He doesn’t bite on fake attempts by an opposing quarterback or ball carrier, and this includes being patient when defending against the play action.

Step Durham has the talent and abilities to be a top defender in the ACC.  As of today he’s not listed to start for the Yellow Jackets, but it’s easy to assume he will see plenty of action this season, and be given the chance to earn a starting role in the secondary.

Two words that best describe Step Durham as a player is “game changer.”

Whether it’s making plays in the secondary, or being utilized on offense, Durham will give 100% and leave everything on the field.  ESPN and Rivals rank him as a four star player on paper, but he plays like a blue chip on the field.
