People are going to read that opening sentence and say that is too much importance being placed on this game–that it’s just a bunch of hype.
Obviously, even the ACC is part of this hype machine when it comes to the Saturday showdown at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Check out the video they released to promote this game:
That is because the ACC knows that this game is a big deal. However, the magnitude of this game for Georgia Tech is only truly understood by Paul Johnson, his players and the fans that love the Yellow Jackets.
Why is this game the biggest game of the year for the Jackets, and at such an early juncture? There are a couple of major and valid reasons for such a statement.
First this game will give the Jackets some validity when it comes to how good they are.
The Jackets are coming into Bobby Dodd with a 4-0 record that a lot of pundits are labeling as fraudulent.
Beating Wofford, Tulane, Georgia Southern, and even Virginia Tech has done nothing to still the skepticism in the minds of a lot of college football followers.
Beating Virginia Tech was truly a big deal for the Jackets after dropping four straight and five of the last six to the Hokies. Getting that win in Blacksburg makes it all the more sweeter.
But analysts will say that Virginia Tech is a flawed team and that those flaws were exposed the week before by East Carolina.
They will say that the win VA Tech got on the road vs Ohio State was more of an indictment on how bad Ohio State was.
The Yellow Jackets are not being taken seriously at 4-0, that is why a win over a Coastal Division foe would be huge for the Jackets.
Georgia Tech would be 2-0 and will have beaten two of the three biggest preseason threats to win the Coastal with the game vs Duke still looming.
Another reason this game is the most important of the year to this point is coming off of a bye week it is important to get the momentum that you have built back.
Bye weeks can be dangerous for a team like Georgia Tech. That is a full week of some people talking about how good they are, knowing that there is still a lot of work to be done.
The worst thing that can happen is for the Yellow Jackets to come into Saturday’s game lethargic and drunk off of fan praise.
The reality is that the Yellow Jackets did play four teams that they should have beaten. The truth is that Tech has not strung together four solid quarters of football yet in one game.
It is a fact that the Jackets give up big plays every game and need to keep those big plays to a minimum this weekend or risk getting run off their own field.
These reasons are why Georgia Tech vs Miami is the most important game of the year for the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech needs to keep their winning ways going and give validity to what they have accomplished this season.
Both the AP and Coaches Poll have voted for them to break into the Top 25. It is time to make those votes look worthy.
