Georgia Tech Baseball: Jackets swept by Louisville in three game series
The Georgia Tech baseball team dropped below .500 for the first time in 2017 as they got swept by Louisville in a three-game series.
The 2017 ACC schedule has not been kind to the Georgia Tech baseball program. After opening the season 9-2, the Yellow Jackets have gone just 7-16 since, not winning a single ACC series so far.
The latest disappointing series for the Yellow Jackets came to the hands of the second-ranked Louisville Cardinals. The series sweep to the hands of the Cardinals has the Jackets on the wrong end of an eight-game losing streak.
Game 1: Lousiville 3 – Georgia Tech 0
With future first round pick and potential first overall pick Brendan McKay on the mound, the Yellow Jacket stood no chance on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets were able to only muster one hit against McKay, as the left-hander pitched eight innings. The lone hit against McKay and in the game for the Yellow Jackets belonged to Coleman Poje who singled in the fourth inning.
For the Yellow Jackets, Ben Schniederjans pitched three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks before Jake Lee got the ball for the remaining six innings. Lee, pitched six strong innings for the Jackets, allowing just one earned run on six hits and one walk.
Thursday night’s loss to Lousiville wasn’t that surprising in reality with McKay on the mound for the Cardinals. With that being said, the pitching of Schniederjans and Lee should give Danny Hall confidence in both pitchers after having successful nights against a very strong hitting team in Lousiville.

Game 2: Louisville 10 – Georgia Tech 1
As strong of a pitching performance it was for Georgia Tech, Friday was a struggle. Freshman Xzavion Curry took the mound for the Jackets and once again struggled against a strong ACC opponent. After pitching three strong innings to start the game off against the Cardinals, Louisville broke out for five runs against Curry in the fourth and fifth innings. Curry would allow the five earned runs (seven total) on eight hits and three walks.
Following Curry’s exit, six different relievers to the mound for the Yellow Jackets over the final four and third innings. Combined, they would allow three runs on five hits and five walks.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets struggled once again, scoring just one run off Lousiville starter Kade McClure over six innings. The Jackets would strike out 11 times on Friday while amassing just six hits. Ryan Peurifoy would have the lone RBI, knocking in Kel Johnson on a single to left field.
Game 3: Louisville 5 – Georgia Tech 4
Saturday’s loss will be the game the Jackets wish they could have back. The Jackets would waste a terrific pitching performance from Jay Shadday. Shadday allowed just two runs on two hits and three walks in five and two-thirds innings. Both runs being allowed in the top of the second.
The Jackets would get on the board in the third inning as Ryan Peurifoy singled to left field scoring Austin Wilhite. The Yellow Jackets would tack on two runs in the fourth thanks to a Colton Murray sacrifice fly scoring Cameron Poje. Xzavion Curry would get his first RBI of the season as well, knocking in Kel Johnson on a single to right field. Curry’s RBI would give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 lead after four innings.
The Yellow Jackets would add on an additional run in the eighth innings, giving them self a two-run cushion heading into the final frame. Zac Ryan took the mound for the Yellow Jackets in the ninth trying to close the game out but instead, allowed Lousiville to score three runs, taking a 5-4 lead. Brendan McKay was the catalyst for the Cardinals ninth-inning rally, starting the inning off with a solo-homerun.
The Yellow Jackets would try to get the tying run across the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to do so, sealing their fate in a 5-4 loss.
On Deck:
The series sweep by Louisville drops the Yellow Jackets 2017 record to 16-18 overall and a dismal 4-14 in ACC play. Georgia Tech currently sits at the bottom of the ACC Coastal division and are the second worst team in the ACC behind Boston College
Next up for the Yellow Jackets is the Mercer Bears on Tuesday evening. The Jackets took on the Bears earlier this season on the road, winning by a final score of 11-3.
