Georgia Tech Softball: Hoerner’s contract not renewed, search for new coach begins
Georgia Tech decided not to renew the contract of Shelly Hoerner on Monday after four seasons as the softball team’s head coach.
Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury announced on Monday morning that Georgia Tech softball head coach Shelly Hoerner’s contract would not be renewed after four seasons. Hoerner was hired after the 2013 season, after the dismissal of Sheron Perkins.
In a press release on RamblinWreck.com on Monday morning, Stansbury said the following;
"I’d like to thank Coach Hoerner for her dedication to Georgia Tech, she worked tirelessly for our student-athletes over the past four years but, ultimately, I’ve made the difficult decision that new leadership is needed to return our softball program to national prominence. I wish Coach Hoerner and her family nothing but the very best.”"
The decision on Hoerner’s contract comes after a season that saw the Georgia Tech softball team go 19-34 on the season. The losing season marks the fifth consecutive losing season, the last winning season being the 2011-2012 season that saw the Jackets make the NCAA Tournament.
Throughout her four seasons as head coach at Georgia Tech, Hoerner collected a record of 80-125. Hoerner is the first full-time coach in Georgia Tech softball history to finish their head coaching career with the Yellow Jackets with a losing record. The previous worst record was held by Kate Madden who went 161-143 from 1999-2003 as the Jacket head coach.
With Hoerner’s dismissal, Todd Stansbury will begin a search for a new head coach. The search could be one of the most important for the program as it looks to return to prominence.
