Georgia Tech Baseball: Miami defeats Jackets in extra innings, effectively ending GT’s season

The Georgia Tech baseball team fell to the Miami Hurricanes in the opening game of pool play on Tuesday, 6-5.

Georgia Tech baseball team’s season is effectively over as the Yellow Jackets fell to Miami in the opening game of group play of the ACC tournament on Monday. It was a game that turned into a bullpen game, with the bullpens dueling it out for eight innings. In the end, Miami would come out on top in the 13th inning on a RBI single by senior catcher Joe Gomez.

Jake Lee started on the mound for Georgia Tech, going two and two-thirds while allowing five earned runs. Lee, almost got himself out of a jam in the third inning, up 4-1 before allowing a two-strike home run to Hunter Tackett who was hitting just .227 with two home runs entering Tuesday.

Junior reliever Jared Datoc was stellar in relief of Lee, going 5.0 strong innings striking out four while allowing five hits, he did not allow a run. Datoc had potentially his best inning of the year during the sixth inning, striking out the side.

Following Datoc was Zac Ryan who like Datoc pitched strongly out of the pen. Unfortunately for Ryan, his fifth inning of work would be his last of the game. After getting the first batter to pop up in the inning, Ryan allowed a walk after two questionable calls from behind the plate, before allowing a single to make it runners on first and third.

On the first pitch of the at-bat, catcher Joe Gomez as said above got the game-winning single going the opposite way to right field.

At the Plate:

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were strong early but really struggled through the final eight innings. The Jackets put five runs through the first five but struggled starting in the sixth. While three different Yellow Jackets collected two hits, three Jackets were also 1-for-6 at the plate including Coleman Poje. While Miami didn’t fair much better in the final eight innings, the Jackets woes can’t be overlooked.

Brandt Stallings drove in two of the Jackets five runs on Tuesday, going 2-for-6 at the plate.

The loss to Miami effectively ends Georgia Tech’s season as they cannot advance from group play. That being said, the Jackets will play their final game on Wednesday against Wake Forest.
