Georgia Tech Football: Calvin Johnson and Marco Coleman on College Hall of Fame ballot

Two of the best Yellow Jackets to ever take the field on The Flats are on the 2018 ballot for the College Hall of Fame.

Georgia Tech legendary wide receiver Calvin Johnson is on the 2018 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame ballot. Johnson is joined by linebacker Marco Coleman, one of the best defensive players not only in Tech history but ACC history.

WR Calvin Johnson (2005-2007):

Johnson, a former five-star recruit in 2004 is the highest rated recruit that the Yellow Jackets have landed in modern day recruiting rankings. Johnson’s impact was felt the moment he stepped on campus, and once he did, the Tyrone, Georgia native never looked back.

Johnson over his three years on The Flats collected 178 receptions, 2,927-yards, and 28-touchdowns. His 2,927 yards and 28 touchdowns are both school records while his 178 receptions rank second only behind Kelly Campbell (195). The number accolades that Johnson received over his college career is astonishing.

As everyone knows, Johnson would go on to be selected second overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He would play nine seasons in Detroit before retiring following the 2015 season. johnson is regarded as one of the most talented receivers to ever play in the NFL.  He finished his career with 731 receptions, 11,619 yards, and 83 touchdowns.

LB/DE Marco Coleman (1989-1991)

A member of the 1990 National Championship team, Coleman is one of the best defensive players to ever play on The Flats. His stats speak for themselves and so does his 1991 All-America selection.

Coleman was a menace on Georgia Tech’s defense all three years on The Flats and in doing so racked up two of the greatest defensive seasons in Tech history. His freshman season showed the potential that would break through in 1990 and 1991. That freshman season, Coleman was able to get to the opposing quarterback 4.5 times. In 1990, Coleman racked up an immense 12.5 sacks, before following up that performance with a 10 sack season in 1991. His 27.5 sacks at Georgia Tech are the fourth most in program history and rank in the top-15 in ACC history.

Following his career at Georgia Tech, Coleman would enter the 19912NFL Draft and be selected by the Miami Dolphins 12th overall. He would go onto having a productive 14-year career that saw him play for six different NFL franchises. His last being the Denver Broncos in 2004 and 2005.

Over those 14-years Coleman collected 124 career tackles with over 50% of those being sacks as he had 65.5 career tackles.
