Ola high school Defensive Tackle Austin Smith is commitment #8 of the 2018 class.

There’s no denying that Paul Johnson’s 2018 class got off to a slow start, but the month of June has completely flipped the script. Over the past few days, the 2018 class has picked up five commitments, the most recent being three-star Defensive Tackle Austin Smith out of Ola high school in McDonough, Georgia.

Smith is the second DT commitment of the wild week. Wednesday, we saw four-star T.K. Chimedza commit to the Yellow Jackets, and now the 2018 class continues to look better in key positions with the addition of Austin Smith.

Smith is listed as a three-star prospect on both 247 and Rivals and is the 112th ranked player in the state per 247. He elected to stay home at Georgia Tech over other offers from Power Five programs such as North Carolina, Arkansas, Kentucky, Virginia Tech and other notable schools. It’s really hard to believe that Smith is only going on his senior year of high

It’s really hard to believe that Smith is only going on his senior year of high school because the kid could pass for an NFL player. His 6 foot 4, 280-pound build sets him apart from other recruits in his class, and it shows on the football field. His ability to shed blockers and get to the ball carrier, whether it be a running back or quarterback, is among his many noticeable skills.

Though there’s no telling whether or not Smith or Chimedza will have an instant impact, they are promising additions to the 2018 class and the future of Tech’s defense. Keep em coming, Paul.
