Paul Johnson’s inaugural season at the helm was a good one. The Yellow Jackets would have ultimately started the season 7-0, but Virginia Tech handed GT their first loss in week three after a penalty-aided drive allowed Virginia Tech to march down the field and take the lead with four minutes to go.

The second half of the season featured wins over Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Georgia. The win over Georgia gained Paul Johnson a ton of fans, as the Yellow Jackets were on a seven-year losing streak to their in-state rivals. The win came in dramatic fashion, as the White & Gold overcame a 28-12 halftime deficit on their way to upsetting the 11th ranked Bulldogs on their home field.

Johnson’s first year with the Jackets was capped off by many awards and honors. CPJ was given the ACC Coach of the Year nod, along with Jonathan Dwyer being named the ACC Player of the Year. Seven Yellow Jackets were given All-ACC honors, and Michael Johnson and Morgan Burnett were given All-American honors.
