Georgia Tech football’s rising sophomore B-Back Dedrick Mills has been named to the Maxwell Award watch list.
Rising sophomore Dedrick Mills is on the path to college football stardom and his chances of going national in 2017 have risen even more. On Monday morning, the Maxwell Football Club announced their Maxwell Award watch list. The award is annually given to the best player in the nation.
Mills last season burst on the scene as a true freshman and put up great numbers. In just nine games last season, Mills had 152 carries for 771-yards and 13 touchdowns. His 13 touchdowns were the second most rushing touchdowns as a freshman last season in the nation.
Mills enters the 2017 season as the Yellow Jackets primary b-back and ball carrier and could be in for a tremendous season, to say the least. Not only will Mills have a chance to make a run for the Maxwell Award but a strong season could put him in the potential running for the Doak Walker award annually given to the nation’s best running back.
The list of 85 college football players has just 16 sophomores on the list, which makes up 18% of the list. The ACC contenders for the Maxwell Trophy are the following;
- Boston College: DE Harold Landry
- Clemson: DT Christian Wilkins
- Duke: QB Daniel Jones
- Florida State: QB Deondre Francois, S Derwin James
- Georgia Tech: RB Dedrick Mills
- Louisville: QB Lamar Jackson
- Miami: RB Mark Walton
- North Carolina: None
- North Carolina State: AP Jaylen Samuels
- Pittsburgh: AP Quadree Henderson
- Virginia: None
- Virginia Tech: None
- Wake Forest: None
In total 10 ACC players were named to the watch list from nine different programs. Mills campaign for the Maxwell Award will begin on September 4th when the Yellow Jackets take on the Tennessee Volunteers at the newly built Mercedes-Benz Stadium. With plenty of primetime games on the schedule this season, Mills will certainly have enough national attention to build a resume for the award.
