3. CB Jaytlin Askew

Entering the preseason, there was only one true freshman listed on the Yellow Jackets two-deep depth chart. That freshman was cornerback Jaytlin Askew, a three-star prospect ranked as the 54th best corner in the country in the 2016 recruiting cycle. While he wasn’t the highest rated cornerback recruit for the Jackets, his skillset and development thus far allowed him to earn a spot on the two-deep depth chart. A major factor that could’ve played into that decision for the coaching staff was Askew was an early-enrollee.

Askew in high school was a very strong cornerback both on passing and rush defense. He showed ability in high school to keep tight coverage on wide receivers while having the closing speed and football IQ to make plays even when he gets beat. He was also a big contributor for McEachern High School’s rush defense and showed that he was not afraid to deliver big hits on the ball carrier.

While it’s hard to say what his impact will be in 2017, it’s fair to say that Askew should see a good amount of playing time this fall. It could be situational or in certain packages but if senior Step Durham goes down it’s fair to say the Jackets have faith in Askew to step up if needed.
