The former Yellow Jacket was signed by the Chiefs after the organization had to placekicker Cairo Santos on the injured reserve. Butker was signed to the Panthers squad following being cut from the team’s 53-man roster during their final cuts. Santos was 3-for-3 this season for the Chiefs and is widely considered one of the better kickers in the NFL.
Butker had an impressive preseason for the Panthers, hitting both field goal attempts while hitting all four extra point attempts. The strong preseason wasn’t enough for the Panthers to keep Butker on the 53-man roster as he was beaten out by NFL veteran Graham Gano.
There will be a ton of pressure on the Atlanta native as the Chiefs are considered one of the top team’s in the NFL this season. Joining a Super Bowl contender who will expect near perfection is always difficult, doing so as a rookie makes it all the more challenging.
That being said, Butker showed at Georgia Tech that he has the ability to be an accurate kicker. During his senior season, Butker made a career-high 88.2% (15-of-17) of his field goals while also making 46-of-46 extra points.
Butker’s NFL regular season debut will come on Monday night when the Chiefs take on the Washington Redskins.
