On Saturday afternoon, Georgia Tech football’s senior class will have the chance to join rare company when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets seniors will have the opportunity to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs for the third time in their collegiate careers. It would be a rare feat in Georgia Tech history that would have the 2017 senior class remembered more than most.

In the history of the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate rivalry, there has only been a handful of classes in Tech history to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs three or more times. The last class to do was the graduating class of 2001, who had defeated the Bulldogs three straight times from 1998 to 2000. But, just how rare though is the feat?

Since 1960, there have only been four graduating classes to defeat the Bulldogs three or more times. Those graduating classes respectively were 1963, 1964, 2000, and 2001 graduating classes.

For the Yellow Jackets, a win on Saturday over the Bulldogs would be one of the bigger wins for the Jacket in recent memory. The Bulldogs on Saturday will be playing for their playoff hopes, another loss would effectively eliminate them from playoff contention. A potential victory on Saturday for the Jackets would also be their sixth of the season making them bowl eligible.

While a six-win season would be still be disappointing with all things considered this season, finishing the season with an upset victory over Georgia would certainly be a way to finish the regular season.

Historically, the odds of the Jackets winning on Saturday is low. The Jackets all-time winning percentage against UGA is just .392. The Jackets also have only won back-to-back games five times since 1960.

In reality, all this means is that a win on Saturday for the Jackets would be sweeter than most wins, even most wins against UGA. The Jackets may not have a great chance to pull off the upset, especially with their track record this season, but when it’s a rivalry, stats and records don’t matter. The one thing that does matter, however, is the Jackets beating UGA. For the Jackets graduating class, being one of the few classes to defeat UGA three or more times is one of the greatest ways you can cement your legacy on The Flats.
