DT Austin Smith will officially join the Georgia Tech Football program on Wednesday when he signs his letter of intent.

Defensive tackle Austin Smith will officially join the Georgia Tech Football program on Wednesday. The three-star defensive tackle is considered the 78th best player at his position in the country and the 111th best player in the state of Georgia.

McDonough will enter school already at a great size for a defensive tackle at 6-foot-4, and 280-pounds. If he can continue to develop on the field, he could certainly become a force at the next level for the Jackets. He is one of two class of 2018 commitments at the defensive tackle position joining three-star TK Chimedza.

Smith is slated to play on the National Team in this month’s Offense-Defense All-American Bowl that is being played in New Orleans at the end of the month.

Recruitment Overview:

According to his 247Sports profile, Smith collected 27 scholarship offers during his recruitment, a strong number for a lower rated three-star recruit. Prior to his commitment to the Jackets in June, Smith was considered a North Carolina lean. Smith’s Power Five offers were the following;

  • Arkansas
  • Duke
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • North Carolina
  • Purdue
  • Rutgers
  • Syracuse
  • Virginia
  • Virginia Tech

The Jackets originally offered Smith in June of last year, his first Power Five offer according to his timeline. This past spring, the Georgia native saw his recruitment take off and received a majority of his offers including several of his offers from Power Five programs.

Smith committed to the Yellow Jackets in June and has remained solid ever since. He is expected to enroll this upcoming Sunday.
