Georgia Tech Football: Jackets legend Calvin Johnson to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame

Georgia Tech legendary wide receiver Calvin Johnson will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

This December, Georgia Tech legendary wideout Calvin Johnson will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He will become the 13th Tech player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the first player since Pat Swilling was inducted in 2009.

Johnson will be inducted with 12 others in New York City on December 4th, of course, the actual Hall of Fame is located in downtown Atlanta and is a must-see destination for any college football fan.

Johnson was originally a five-star recruit out of Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Georgia. Johnson was ranked the 23rd best player in that recruiting class and the fifth-best wide receiver in the country. It’s safe to say he had a better collegiate and NFL career than any of the receivers ranked above him.

Once Johnson arrived on campus in 2004, he made an instant impact. In his freshman season, Johnson had 48 receptions for 837-yards and seven touchdowns. In his sophomore season, he had 54 receptions and 888-yards to go along with six more touchdowns.

Entering his junior season he was regarded as one of the best receivers in the country, but his junior season would make him one of the best players in the country overall. That season, Johnson had 76 receptions for 1,202-yards and 15 touchdowns.

His career totals of 178 receptions, 2,927-yards, and 28 touchdowns rank second, first, and first respectively in program history. The only receiver in program history with more career receptions was Kelly Campbell who had 195.

To go along with his ranks in program history, Johnson was a three-time, First-team All-ACC member, a two-time First Team All-American, and the ACC Player of the Year. He was also named the best receiver in the country for his junior season winning the Fred Biletnikoff Award.

Johnson would declare for the NFL Draft following his junior season. He would go on to be drafted by the Detroit Lions with the second overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. After a good first season, Johnson would go on to become the best receiver in the game. During his NFL career, Johnson would go on to have seven seasons of 1,000+ yards including an NFL record 1,964-yards in 2012.

Despite signing an 8-year, $132-million contract in 2012, Johnson announced his retirement following the 2015 season, after just nine years. He finished his career with 731 receptions, 11,619-yards, and 83 touchdowns.
