The Georgia Tech baseball got their 2018 season off to a great start with a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Friday.

The Georgia Tech baseball team is officially 1-0 on the season after defeating the University of Minnesota 3-2 on Friday night. The Jackets looking to better their 2017 campaign record of 27-28 narrowly eked out their victory on Friday night.

Sophomore Xzavion Curry got his second consecutive opening day start for the Yellow Jackets and had a quality performance to start the season. Curry pitched five innings on Friday night, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks, he struck out three in the process.

Curry’s control which plagued it him at times in 2017 wasn’t as strong as head coach Danny Hall would like to see but it was enough to get the job done. Two of the three hits allowed by Curry were two solo home runs by Gophers outfielder Jordan Kozicky.

Offensively for the Jackets, it was a slow day, as they amassed eight hits and three walks that helped lead to their three runs. Five of the Jackets’ eight hits came from middle infielders Wade Bailey and Austin Wilhite who had two and three hits respectively.

First baseman Tristin English drove in a run in his first game back after missing all of last due to Tommy John surgery. Designated hitter Kel Johnson and outfielder Nick Wilhite also drove in a run each in the Jackets victory.

The star of the game was sophomore reliever Connor Thomas who pitched four shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out five.

Next: Changes coming to Bobby Dodd in 2018

The Jackets will return to the diamond on Saturday to take on the Bradley Braves before finishing up their weekend and the Atlanta Challenge on Sunday with the Connecticut Huskies coming to town.
