The Georgia Tech football staff earn it’s first commitment of the 2019 recruiting class on Thursday afternoon.

This time around, the Georgia Tech football staff won’t have to wait until June to earn their first commitment of their recruiting class. On Thursday afternoon, Grayson safety Jeremiah Smith committed to the program.

A three-star recruit, Smith committed to the Yellow Jackets on Thursday despite having offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State,  Minnesota, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia. According to his 247Sports profile, Smith was recruited by safeties coach Shiel Wood who joined the Yellow Jackets this past off season, as part of the new defensive staff.

Smith’s commitment is Wood’s first commitment from any prospect during his tenure at Georgia Tech as the prospect’s primary recruiter. The Jackets in their last recruiting cycle signed one safety, that being Thomasville native Charlie Thomas.

Currently, Smith is ranked just outside the top-1000 players nationally as well being just outside the top-100 players in the state. As the first commitment in the class, Smith has the unique opportunity to become one of the Jackets biggest recruiters and will be a big part of how the rest of the class is constructed.

Despite being one of the top programs in the state and considered a top-100 program nationally, the Yellow Jackets have not had a ton of success recruiting Grayson under Paul Johnson. The program currently lead by head coach Christian Hunnicutt has sent just three players to The Flats during Johnson’s tenure.

The two other players that Grayson has sent to Tech during Johnson’s tenure are defensive tackle Shawn Green (2010) and defensive end Chris Martin (2016).

Green played in 35 games over our seasons for the Jackets and recorded 56 tackles in the process. Martin redshirted his true freshman season and appeared in two games this past season but did not record any stats.

Perhaps Smith will help create a stronger pipeline from the powerhouse school in Loganville to The Flats of Bobby Dodd Stadium.
