The Georgia Tech softball team went 4-1 this past weekend as they took part in the Camel Stampede in North Carolina.
Game 1 vs Fairfield: 4-3 loss
The Jackets started off fast in the top of the first, with Katie Krzus and Becca Prairie both gathered RBIs to give the Jackets a 2-0 lead. Fairfield would answer however scoring 3 runs to take a 3-2 lead. in the sixth Katie Krzus hit a solo home run to tie the game up at 3. however in the next half inning Fairfield would take the lead back off a throwing error. The Jackets could not rally in the seventh and fell to Fairfield 4-3.
Takeaways: The shutdown innings, or innings after the offense scored are what hurt the Jackets in this game, and really has been a struggle in their first couple weeks of games. Katie Krzus is really starting to catch her stride going 2-3 and hitting her 3rd home run of the season. 3 of the 4 runs given up by Emily Anderson were earned, although her strike out to walk ratio was 9 to 1. She was given the loss and dropped to 2-3.
Game 2 vs Campbell: 6-2 win
The Jackets scored first off of a home run from Becca Prairie making it 1-0. The Jackets scored 2 more in the fourth off of an error and an infield single from Prairie. Freshman Naomi Dickerson got the start and tossed 4 scoreless innings. but in the fifth Campbell hit a 2 run home run forcing the Jackets to make a pitching change. Brooke Barfield came in in relief. in the seventh with two outs the Jackets strung together 3 runs off of RBIs from Stanford, Chisolm and freshman pinch hitter Bianca Mora. The Jackets kept their lead to bounce back with a 6-2 win.
Takeaways: The Jackets were able to bounce back from a tough one run loss and get off to another quick start. In this game the Jackets were able to keep Campbell queit after scoring. The most impressive thing was freshman Cameron Stanford who pitched well last weekend got the start in CF, and went 3-4. Naomi Dickerson earned her first win of the season and is now 1-2. She’ll need to keep having quality starts to back up Emily Anderson.
Game 3 vs Fairfield: 13-4 (5) win

Even though Fairfield scored first in this game the Jackets quickly answered with a 4 spot in the bottom of the first, and then a 5 spot in the bottom of the second. with RBIs from Huckabay and Sonnon along with a couple of errors. The Jackets lead 10-1 heading into the fifth, but Fairfield scored 3 to avoid the run rule. But the Jackets responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run by Krzus and then when the Jackets put someone on base Cameron Stanford hit a walk off home run giving Tech the 13-4 run rule victory.
Takeaways: The Jackets really carried momentum from the win from the night before into this game. It was their greatest offensive output of the season. The other positive about their offfense was the fact that the RBI’s were spread out. Two players with 3 RBIs in Draven Sonnon and Lilly Hooper. The Jackets hit 2 home runs from Cameron Stafford who has to be a pleasent surprise for coach Morales and Katie Krzus who is stepping up as Tech’s leading returning hitter. Naomi Dickerson got another win and another quality start for the Jackets. Barfield also did a wonderful job in relief.
Game 4 vs La Salle: 3-2 win
The Yellow Jackets scored firwst for the third time in the weekend with an RBI from Prairie in the first to make it 1-0. Emily Anderson got the start in the circle and kept La Salle scoreless through four innings. In the fifth La Salle hit a two run home run to make it 2-1, it stayed that way until the bottom of the 7th when Cameron Stanford and Draven Sonnon hit back to back home runs to give Tech the walk off win 3-2.
Takeaways: The power throughout the Yellow Jackets offense is really starting to show itself. Not surprisingly Emily Anderson put together another quality start going 7.0 innings only giving up 2 hits. The effects of Alison Owen’s coaching with the pitchers is apparent.
Game 5 vs Campbell: 8-0 (6) win
Another big first inning got the Jackets started when Katie Krzus hit her fourth home run of the season to score 2. Krzus came back in third with another home run this time scoring 3. Two bases loaded walks and a RBI single from Huckabay made the Tech lead 8-0 in the sixth. Emily Anderson kept Campbell off the board in the bottom of the inning to give Tech the 8-0 win in 6 innings.
Takeaways: This game really showed the level of play that the Yellow Jackets are capable of. All three phases of the game were in sync. Anderson pitched 6 innings only giving up 2 hits and 0 runs, the Jackets hit well and also played stellar defense. The Jackets are now at the .500 mark at 6-6 and the next couple weeks will tell which way their season could trend. If the Jackets can take an above .500 record into ACC play they’ll be in prime positioning the rest pf the way.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday in a single game hosting Kennesaw State.
