Georgia Tech baseball’s star catcher Joey Bart was selected second overall in Monday night’s MLB Draft.

Georgia Tech’s Joey Bart didn’t have to wait long on Monday night during the 2018 MLB Draft as the San Francisco Giants made Joey Bart their selection. An All-American and the ACC player of the Year, Bart is the highest selection in Georgia Tech history. By going second overall, Bart surpassed the previous high of fourth overall when Kevin Brown was selected by the Texas Rangers in 1986.

This past season, Bart hit .359/.471/.632 with 16 home runs and 38 RBI. He also earned 41 free bases on the season while striking out 56 times in 57 games. For his career at Tech, Bart finished as a .321 career hitter with 30 home runs and 112 RBI.

His stellar senior season and tool set even put him in contention as the potential first overall pick in Monday night’s draft however the Detroit Tigers decided on Auburn starting pitcher Casey Mize.

Bart is now the third Georgia Tech catcher drafted in the first round, joining Jason Varitek and Matt Wieters. Varitek of course went onto have a tremendous MLB career and is one of the most beloved players in Boston Red Sox history.

Weiters is still playing in his tenth season and while he has struggled recently, Weiters has lived up to his billing as a first round pick. Bart now this summer will look to start his journey and will look to become the next Georgia Tech catcher to make his impact at the Major League level.

MLB.com compared Bart favorably to former Tech standout and first round pick mentioned above, Matt Wieters. After being selected, MLB Networks’s Dan O’Dowd a former MLB general manager called Bart the most potential impactful player in the 2018 MLB Draft. Numerous scouts and analysts praised his abilities and was even called the “most complete player in this year’s draft” and especially due to his abilities to already call games, a rarity in catchers before joining the professional ranks.

The Giants will have just over a month to sign Bart who is expected to land a pretty nice signing bonus.
