Georgia Tech Football: Could Jackets pursue former five-star wide receiver?
Former five-star wide receiver and Georgia native Demetris Robertson announced on Thursday that he will be leaving the University of California-Berkeley football program.
Demetris Robertson is transferring from Cal and is looking for a new home, the former five-star recruit tweeted Friday.
The once 13th overall rated prospect in the nation had high interest in the Yellow Jackets coming out of high school, actually signing financial aid with the school amongst others before committing to Cal.
Now that the Georgia native has announced his decision to leave Cal due to personal reasons, could the Yellow Jackets once again be interested in Robertson?
The Yellow Jackets are currently slated to have about eight wide receivers on the roster next season and while it is a talented group, none of them possess the play-making ability and game changing ability that Robertson has. It’s a trait that Tech hasn’t had in a receiver since Demaryius Thomas was suiting up for the Yellow Jackets.
Robertson in his freshman season at Cal put up numbers that many expected the Savannah native could put up. The numbers were strong enough that he earned Freshman All-American honors as he caught 50 passes for 767-yards and seven touchdowns.

Last season he had a much smaller impact playing in just seven games before surgery for a sports hernia shut him down for the remainder of the season. The hernia reportedly dated back to his freshman season.
Education played a role in Robertson’s recruitment the first time around and it wouldn’t be shocking if it does again as he looks for a new program. Tech, one of the most prestigious schools in the country could lead Robertson to the places he wants to go professionally outside of football. He has made it public about his future after football and his career aspirations go way beyond the gridiron.
Obviously, one of the biggest, if not the biggest factor will be how much Robertson wants to contribute to an offense. If he wants to look to become that elite receiver that it’s up a ton of yards that many expected he could be out of high school, Tech may not be the greatest fit.
However, if he is alright with a more limited role but still being the premier receiver, Tech could be a great fit. That being said, when having top talent at WR, Paul Johnson has shown the ability and willingness to tailor his offense and allow that WR to have a greater presence than usual.
In the end, it could be a pipe dream for the Yellow Jackets but there is history between the two and ultimately it’s not an incredibly crazy idea. I wouldn’t get my hopes up about the idea however and I ultimately expect him to land at either Alabama or Georgia.
