Special Teams: B+

The special teams effort on Saturday earned itself a solid “B” performance. While nothing with the unit really popped out and caught your attention, when you put it all together, it was a quality effort. In the punt return game, the Jackets looked to freshman Juanyeh Thomas to return punts. Thomas ended up returning three punts and picked up 31 return yards on the day. That being said, 25 of those yards came on one return. For Thomas, it was a good building block in the return game to get himself started with and he should only grow from here. Thomas also returned the lone kickoff of the day from Alcorn State for 10-yards.

The place kicking like last year will most likely be a work in progress and on Saturday. While no field goals were attempted in the 41-0 blowout by either Brenton King or Shawn Davis, both kickers had their shots at extra points as King went 3-for-3 while Davis knocked in his only extra point try of the day. It’s a good start for the kicking game but can they make the big kicks in crunch time?

Sophomore punter Pressley Harvin III ended up punting the ball just once in Saturday’s game but that lone punt was solid as it traveled 48-yards. There should be no worries about Harvin moving forward this season as he is truly one of the best punters in the nation and in being so is one of Georgia Tech’s best weapons as a whole.
