Georgia Tech Football: Jackets open up as favorite over Pittsburgh
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have opened as a 2.5 point favorite over the 1-1 Pittsburgh Panthers.
The Georgia Tech football team has opened as a 2.5-point favorite over the 1-1 Pittsburgh Panthers for their week three class in Pittsburgh. The matchup will be each program’s ACC opener for the 2018 season. Last season, the Yellow Jackets defeated Pittsburgh 35-17 at home despite four turnovers.
Last week, the Yellow Jackets opened with the same odds against South Florida before being about a 3.5-point favorite at kickoff on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets ended leading at one point by 10-points in the fourth quarter but collapsed and eventually took a 49-38 loss to the Bulls. It’s safe to say that late game collapse left head coach Paul Johnson and the coaching staff with a bad taste in their mouth. Look for the Jackets come out with authority on Saturday.
The Panthers on the other hand are coming off a pummeling at the hands of Penn State. After giving the Nittany Lions a run for their money in the first half, everything fell apart for Pittsburgh in the second half. With a few minutes to go in the second quarter, Penn State had just a one-point lead in a 7-6 game. Penn State from there would score 44 unanswered points and beat the Panthers 51-6. With that being said, neither program is feeling too great heading into this week three matchup that could be pivotal to both program’s seasons going forward.
The Yellow Jackets following last week’s loss to the Bulls are now 0-2 against the spread this season after narrowly missing the chance to cover against Alcorn State in week one. The Yellow Jackets have been able to cover the spread just once in their last seven games dating back to last season according to Oddshark. However, more importantly than covering the spread, the Jackets have just won twice in their last seven games total and have dropped six straight road games. Their last win on the road came back in 2016.
Pittsburgh on the other hand has been quite well dating back to last season, winning five of their last seven games. At home, the Panthers are not easy to beat as Miami found that out last year in the final week of the regular season. Despite the Panthers coming off a demoralizing loss to Penn State, they will certainly put up a fight on Saturday. Expect the Panthers to try and come out to make a statement against the Yellow Jackets.
