The first player in our 2018-19 player previews for Georgia Tech basketball is highly touted freshman Michael Devoe from Orlando, Florida.

Former four-star recruit Michael Devoe is the first player up in our 2018-19 player previews as the Orlando native is set for his first season in Atlanta. That being said, Devoe’s season may not start right on time as the true freshman suffered a toe injury this summer.

Prior to coming to Tech, Devoe was ranked by 247Sports’ composite rankings as the 51st best player in the nation, the 11th best point guard, and the seventh best prospect in the state of Florida. He selected the Yellow Jackets over USC and Wake Forest respectively. He is the eighth best recruit in the 2018 class when you combine the recruiting classes of all the ACC’s programs.

As a true freshman, Devoe will have a ton of pressure on his shoulders as the Yellow Jackets lost a ton of experience and scoring this past offseason including the losses of Josh Okogie and Ben Lammers.

The expectation for Devoe is for the Florida native to come in right for the Yellow Jackets and be a starter and heavy contributor.

That being said, the Tech coaching staff has the decision to make of putting him at point guard where he would replace sophomore point guard Jose Alvarado or move him to the shooting guard position where they can take advantage more often than not of his shooting potential. When considering the coaching staff’s admiration for Jose Alvarado, the latter option seems like the most likely right now.

Either way, Devoe is in line to be a major contributor for the Yellow Jackets in the 2018-19 season as long as he’s healthy. The coaching staff and fans alike will expect big things out of the freshman this season and beyond.

Devoe will be a beneficial addition to the Yellow Jackets as he’s a highly versatile and well-rounded guard. A creative player, offensively Devoe will find ways to either score or find an open man. Defensively, his long wingspan allows him to be a menace defensively who will cause his fair share of problems for opposing point guards.
