Georgia Tech Football: Yellow Jackets open as near touchdown favorite over UVA
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets opened as a near touchdown favorite over the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday night.
The Jackets, winners of three straight and five of their last six are playing their best football in almost two years including a 27-21 victory over Miami on Saturday night. The Cavaliers are also having a strong season, clinching their first winning season since 2011. Overall, Virginia has just two winning seasons since 2007.
The 6.5-point line is the biggest line in favor of the Yellow Jackets against a Power 5 opponent since last season when they were a seven-point favorite over Duke. The Jackets would end up falling 43-20 to the Blue Devils.
Last season, the Yellow Jackets were a similar favorite over the Cavaliers. With the spread at -7.5 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The Jackets in that game would end up blowing a second-half lead in a 40-36 losing effort.
Overall, the series between the two schools has been the even series with the series at 20-1-19 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
A win on Saturday for the Yellow Jackets over Virginia would push the Yellow Jackets to 7-4 on the season. A record that seemed improbable when they started the season with at 1-3. With a seventh win, it would mean the Yellow Jackets have finished the regular season with a winning record in nine of Paul Johnson’s 11 seasons at the helm, a mark of consistency to say the least.
At one point this season, it was questionable if Paul Johnson would return next season as Georgia Tech’s head coach. With his wins over Miami and Virginia Tech this season, Johnson has easily secured another season as head coach and maybe even two. Yes, both the Hurricanes and Hokies are experiencing down seasons but they’re still counted in the win column.
Overall, the Yellow Jackets have made vast improvements on both sides of the ball this season as the season has gone on and a win on Saturday against a quality Virginia team will at the least give the Yellow Jackets a shot at an eight-win season
