Georgia Tech Basketball: Yellow Jackets use big first half in win over UTRGV
The Georgia Tech men’s basketball team improved to 3-1 on Wednesday night with a 72-44 victory over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The Yellow Jackets were lead offensively by freshman point guard Michal Devoe who contributed 14-points on the night despite going 1-for-5 from beyond the arch. The freshman also had 5 assists in his best performance of the season. Jose Alvarado came off the bench due to a “coaches decision” but still was able to score 13 points and 3 assists.
The Yellow Jackets as a team used a tremendous first half performance on both ends of the court to jump out to a 42-11 lead at halftime. At the half, UTRGV was shooting just 8.3% from the field, a testament to the Yellow Jackets strong defensive play but also a testament to how unlucky the Vaqueros were on Wednesday night. UTRGV would finish the game with a 22.6% shooting percentage, making 12-of-53 attempts from the field for the game.
The Jackets as a team offensively shot 43.1% and 28.6% from three-point range. Moses Wright lead all starters with 11-points, making 5-of-8 shot attempts. Brandon Alston continued to be efficient offensively, shooting 3-for-5, scoring 9 points. Texas transfer James Banks III only scored two points while coming off the bench for the Yellow Jackets but ended up leading the team with 8 rebounds.
One place the Yellow Jackets would like to see improvement offensively is from the charity stripe as they shot just 62.9% from the line, making 22-of-35 attempts.
Defensively, the Jackets as a team had 12 steals and 6 blocks but struggled a bit on the boards, allowing 13 offensive rebounds. All in all, it was a strong performance for the Yellow Jackets who will have one day off before taking on Prairie Valley on Friday afternoon.
