Georgia Tech Football: What to look for in Georgia Tech’s next head coach
Georgia Tech is officially in the business of looking for a new head football coach and here are three characteristics that should be key in the search for the Yellow Jackets new head coach.
Strong offensive mind:
The Yellow Jackets are most likely going to exit the option era of Georgia Tech football and go back to either a pro-style offense or a spread offense. The Jackets current offensive roster is not built towards either of those offensive styles meaning, the next head coach of the Yellow Jackets will have to be innovative in the ways they get the offensive personnel involved. The Jackets can go towards a defensive minded head coach but that will leave plenty of questions on the offensive side of the ball which makes it seem like the less likely of the two at this current point.
Strong recruiter:
The Jackets are going to want to hire a strong recruiter. There are those who believe that Georgia Tech over the last few years could have been recruiting at a higher rate than they were. While there is definitely room for improvement, it’s going to take a coach who is a strong recruiter. Georgia and the south, in general, is a hotbed of football talent and the Yellow Jackets have a lot going for them minus the strict academic standards. I truly believe the Yellow Jackets can become the premier program in the ACC Coastal if they find a head coach who can recruit at a high level. Will it be easy? Certainly not, but there is plenty working in the next head coaches favor.
Georgia Tech ties or ties to the south:
Having a head coach who has ties to Georgia Tech could be a smart way to go. The coach would know what he’s getting himself and the academic standards that he needs to recruit within. However, finding a coach who has ties to the south is the utmost importance and is probably one of the characteristics that Todd Stansbury and his search committee should look for in other coaches. In terms of recruiting, a coach who has connections with high school programs in the south is huge. The coach already has relationships with the high school coaching staffs and that’s a major factor on the recruiting trail. It also helps to have a coach who knows the expectations of a major college football program in the south.
Obviously, there are more than three characteristics that Todd Stansbury and the search committee will look for in Tech’s next head coach. That being said, these three characteristics are probably the most important from a football perspective that they should be looking for in Tech’s next head coach. It goes without saying that this coaching hire will shape not just Georgia Tech football but the Georgia Tech athletic department as a whole.
