Georgia Tech Football: Previewing the QB room entering spring practices
Spring practices are still quite a while away from starting but it’s never too early to look ahead as we begin looking at the Georgia Tech football roster position-by-position entering spring practices.
Georgia Tech entering the 2019 season will have five scholarship quarterbacks on their roster after bringing in two recruits in the 2019 recruiting class (Demetrius Knight and Jordan Yates). That being said, neither recruit decided to enroll early on The Flats leaving just three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for the winter and spring sessions.
In a year with no set quarterback set to lead the charge into the 2019 season, these three quarterbacks below will have the upper hand on Demetrius Knight and Jordan Yates when it comes to potentially being the Jackets starting quarterback in 2019.

RS Junior – Lucas Johnson:
At this point, Johnson is considered the odds on favorite to be the Jackets starting quarterback come August 29th when the Jackets take on Clemson. A pro-style quarterback coming out of high school, Johnson looked primed to be the Jackets backup quarterback last year to TaQuon Marshall before going down with a severe leg injury in fall camp. Johnson missed all of last season but it appears his rehab is going well and should be able to at least participate in part of spring camp.
RS Sophomore – Tobias Oliver:
Oliver’s future at quarterback is currently up in the air. While it wouldn’t be shocking for him to remain at quarterback, there are those around the program including those who cover it who believe Oliver is destined for a position move where his athleticism where be better suited. If Oliver does stay at quarterback, he’ll definitely have a say in the quarterback competition but he would need to work on his passing game quite a bit.
RS Freshman – James Graham:
Graham played in three games as a true freshman in 2018, allowing him to keep his redshirt. That being said, Graham did not participate in the Jackets bowl game against Minnesota after being suspended due to academic ineligibility. If Graham is eligible come spring practices, he’ll have a solid chance in the competition.
As mentioned above, Johnson, Oliver, and Graham will have an upper hand on Demetrius Knight and Jordan Yates in this spring and summer’s quarterback competition. All three of these quarterbacks have the talent and skill set to play in the ACC but with the Jackets switching to a pro-style system, the odds are with Lucas Johnson entering this spring. That being said, we’re not counting out the potential emergence of Jordan Yates this summer as the Milton product had a tremendous senior season and showed he can throw the rock as well as anyone on the Jackets roster.
The quarterback competition is going to be a fun one to watch to say the least this spring and summer. All eyes will be on the quarterback as the Jackets look to start a new of era of Georgia Tech football.
