A four-run third inning by Georgia Tech on Friday evening propelled the Jackets to an opening day 6-3 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Xzavion Curry picked up his third opening day win in three tries on Friday evening when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets took down the UIC Flames at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Jackets propelled themselves to a victory on Friday using the long ball, including three coming in the third inning.
Catcher Kyle McCann got the Jackets offense rolling in the third with his first home run of 2019 in the third inning before OF Chase Murray and 3B Oscar Serratos would go back-to-back to make it 4-0.
Tristin English and Austin Wilhite would pick up RBIs of their own later in the game, coming in the fourth and seventh innings respectively.
Xzavion Curry pitched five strong innings on the mound for the Jackets, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine in the process. Curry got through five complete innings untouched before allowing two runs on a Thomas Smart homerun in the sixth inning.
Danny Hall would pull the junior righthander following the home run, going to Brant Hurter out of the pen. Hurter finished the sixth inning for the Jackets.
Jonathan Hughes would relief Hurter during the seventh inning and allowed one run over two innings. Tristin English would come in during the ninth to pick up his first save of the 2019 campaign and give the Jackets a 6-3 victory.
The Jackets will now have to turn around and play a doubleheader on Saturday starting with Richmond at 12:00 pm and West Virginia at 6:00 pm. The Jacket will look to start the season off at 3-0 for the sixth time this decade. Their last 3-0 start coming in the 2017 season.
