According to The Athletic’s Tori McElhaney, Georgia Tech football defensive coordinator has turned down the same job at the University of Oregon.

A major key to building a program is by keeping together a coaching staff, having a coaching staff that players can continue to build relationships with as well as have a level of comfortability from year-to-year is important. Now, yes, the Yellow Jackets coaching staff has been with the program for just over two months, but the point remains. Keeping a coaching staff together is highly important.

That being said, according to a report by The Athletic’s Tori McElhaney, the Yellow Jackets could have lost their defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker to the University of Oregon. The Ducks recently parted ways with well-respected defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt. While Leavitt has built strong defenses elsewhere but struggled during his two seasons in Eugene.

That being said, on the Ducks’s shortlist appeared to be Thacker who spent the two last two seasons at Temple with Geoff Collins. Thacker, at just 33-years old is a rising name in the coaching world and will be a hot name going forward if the Yellow Jackets defense plays well in 2019.

The fact that Thacker turned down Oregon is great news for the Yellow Jackets on many fronts. Obviously, it keeps the coaching staff intact and allows continuity going forward. Second, it shows to the players and recruits that the Jackets coaching staff including Thacker have fully bought into the new culture on The Flats and are here for the long run. Now, that doesn’t mean Thacker or another coach won’t take an offer to coach at another school anytime in the future but it shows that it will take a sizeable offer to do so.

Thacker so far has been a fan favorite in the brief glimpses the public has gotten of his work ethic and the type of practices and drills he runs. He’s just another important cog to what has so far been a rejuvenation of the Georgia Tech football program. There will be it’s ups-and-downs but it’s clear that the coaching staff has fully bought in and that’s something the Tech fanbase should be excited
