Spring practices are drawing closer and it’s time to take a look at Georgia Tech’s running back room which will be a little smaller than it has in years past.

One Georgia Tech position group that will look different this upcoming season will be that of the Georgia Tech running backs. In the past, the Jackets running back room was split into the b-backs and the a-backs. The b-backs were more of your traditional running backs while the a-backs were more of your all-purpose style running backs.

Now, in preparation for this position preview, we had to make some projected roster moves. After moving around some players, we have narrowed the Yellow Jackets running backs group down to seven players.

Players that have been moved have mostly been moved to either wide receiver or a position group we have created for now called the “flex” position. Think of this as a fantasy football roster spot but slightly different. For us, the flex position is players who may play running back, may play receiver, may play another position or multiple. For future reference, the eight players we have included in the position group are the following with the original position in parentheses.

More from Football

  • RS-FR Tijai Whatley (RB)
  • RS-FR Dontae Smith (RB)
  • RS-FR Avery Showell (DB)
  • RS-JR  Xavier Gantt (RB)
  • RS-SR Nate Correll (RB)
  • RS-SR Ohmari Jarrett (RB)

Now, the running back group we have the Jackets most likely having this upcoming season is the following;

  • FR Tony Amerson
  • FR Devin Ellison
  • FR Jamious Griffin
  • RS-FR Christian Malloy
  • RS-SO Jordan Mason
  • JR Jerry Howard
  • RS-SR KirVonte Benson

That being said, out of this group of seven players, only four of these guys are on campus. Those being Christian Malloy, Jordan Mason, Jordan Howard, and KirVonte Benson. With just four true running backs on the roster including one coming off a season-ending knee injury, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Jackets keep one of our “flex” guys at the position. But let’s breakdown the four players we do know will enter this spring at running back.
