The Georgia Tech softball team will take their talents to Starkville, Mississippi this weekend for a three-day tournament.

The Georgia Tech softball team will look to have a big weekend starting on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Starkville, Mississippi to compete in the Mississippi State tournament. The three-day tournament begins on Saturday and will play through Monday evening.

The three other teams in this year’s Mississippi State tournament is Alcorn State, Southeastern Louisiana, and of course, the tournament hosts, Mississippi State. The Jackets will look for a big weekend after going 5-4 through their first nine games, their weekday game scheduled for Wednesday against Jacksonville State was postponed due to weather.

Alcorn State:

The Alcorn State softball team didn’t get off to a great start this season, losing each of their first three games. However, the Braves were able to win both of their last two games against Kentucky State last week and will enter this weekend’s tournament with a 2-3 record. In four of those five games, the Braves bats have been rather silent but they did have a 15-run performance in a 15-0 shutout win over Kentucky State. They’ll take on the Jackets at 11:00 am EST on Sunday afternoon.

Southeastern Louisiana:

It’s been quite the opening to the season for the Lions who enter this weekend with a 6-6 record. The Lions have had their fair shares of ups and downs through their first three weeks of games but are losers of three of their last four games. Their last group of games came last weekend when they hosted the Lions Classic II, where they won two of five games and struggled offensively in their final two games. Their pitching this year has been pretty good for what it’s worth, meaning their success at this point is more of a matter of making sure they’re bats are ready to go. The Jackets will face the Lions on Monday at 11:00 am.

Mississippi State:

The Bulldogs are off to a fantastic start so far this season, going 7-3 through their first ten games. After winning four of five in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, Mississippi State split their four games at the Puerto Vallarta Classic in Mexico last weekend. They then took down Alabama State this past Wednesday. Their hot start has them knocking on the door of top 25 polls, meaning another big weekend for the Bulldogs could put them in the top-25. The Jackets will take on the Bulldogs twice this weekend, once on Saturday at 12:00 pm and once on Sunday at 12:30 pm.

Overall, it will be a challenging weekend for the softball program. Their pitching has not been at the level that’s been expected. The bats have been on fire since their first two games of the season against Providence. If they can get more out of their pitching staff this weekend, the Jackets will have a chance to make a pretty strong statement and set themselves up in a good spot heading into March.
