The Georgia Tech bats were nowhere to be found on Sunday afternoon as the Yellow Jackets dropped the rubber match of their three-game series against UCLA 6-0.

The Georgia Tech baseball team started off the weekend with a bang when they took down a top-5 ranked UCLA team 4-3 in extra innings thanks to a Kyle McCann walk-off homerun. On Saturday, the Jackets fell behind early to the Bruins and never caught up but had a second chance at winning the series on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the Jackets, that wasn’t the case on Sunday. The Jackets in the rubber match game of their three-game series against the Bruins could never get it going at the plate, mustering up just four hits on the afternoon.

Jesse Bergin pitched six tremendous innings for UCLA, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out four. The Jackets couldn’t figure out Bergin and while they made contact, they were often easily fieldable for UCLA.

On the hill for the Jackets was sophomore Brant Hurter, usually the Jackets midweek starter. However, after getting his midweek to start this past week postponed, the Jackets gave Hurter the ball on Sunday. Hurter pitched well in his own right but without any offense being provided by the Jackets bats’, Hurter didn’t stand much of a chance on Sunday.

He finished with a line of 5 innings pitch, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 6 hits while striking out 7. He did give up some hard contact at times but he remained around the plate all afternoon and in reality pitched well enough to win this game. It will be a strong start for the sophomore to build off going forward this season.

Offensively for the Jackets, it was much of the same story that was seen on Saturday. The top of the Jackets order struggled while the middle of the order had most of the success. On Sunday, the Jackets top third of the batting order went 0-for-13 while 2-for-8 but even then, 2-for-8 is nothing to brag about.

Notes:

  • Following Sunday’s game, only two Tech regulars are hitting above .200 this season. Those two players are Kyle McCann and Austin Wilhite.
  • The Jackets offense only had 15 hits this weekend over their three-game series and only eight combined hits between Saturday and Sunday’s contests.
  • UCLA now leads the series all-time between the two programs with a 6-3 record.

For the Jackets, the loss moved the Jackets record to 3-3 on the season while UCLA improved their record to 6-1 on the season. Up next or the Jackets will be Georgia State on Tuesday in the first part of a mid-week home-and-home series against the Panthers. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
