Georgia Tech Softball: Jackets split Sunday doubleheader in Starkville

The Georgia Tech softball team split their doubleheader on Sunday on the second day of the Mississippi State Tournament.

After losing their first game of the Mississippi State Tournament on Saturday, the Georgia Tech softball team took the field once again on Sunday, this time in a doubleheader. The Jackets looking to come out of the tournament with a winning record took on Alcorn State and Mississippi State on Sunday.

The Jackets first game on Sunday was against Alcorn State. The Jackets were able to come up on top over the Braves by a final score of 8-4, thanks in part to 5 errors by the Braves defense. Offensively, the Jackets were able to gather nine hits.

Sophomore Breanne Roper led the Jackets in the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate, she also led the Yellow Jackets with 4 RBI for the game. Amber Johns got the win for the Jackets in game one, pitching 3.2 innings in relief of Brooke Barfield who got the start. The win moved Johns record to 2-3 on the season.

Game two on Saturday against Mississippi State did not go as well for the Jackets. The Jackets were shutout and dominated thoroughly by the final score of 9-0, the game was called following the top of the fifth. In the game, the Jackets had just two hits for the game, while the Bulldogs strung together 7 hits and 4 walks in their 9 run effort. The Jackets also contributed 3 errors to the Bulldogs success on Sunday afternoon. Amber Johns took the loss in the defeat, giving her a 2-4 record for the season.

Following their doubleheader on Sunday, the Jackets sit at 6-6 on the season and will have the opportunity to get above .500 on Monday morning.

The Jackets will have two more games to play in the Mississippi State Tournament, the first coming tomorrow morning at 11:00 am against the Southeastern Lousiana Lions. Their second game will be at 4:00 pm against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. After that the Jackets will return home and will be set to take on Kennesaw State on Wednesday evening.
