The Georgia Tech baseball team dropped their third straight series opener on Thursday, this time to the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Georgia Tech baseball narrowly fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday night in the first game of their three-game series over the holiday weekend. Xzavion Curry picked up his second loss of the season despite giving just three runs on the evening. The loss drops his record to 4-2 on the season. Offensively, the Jackets bats were kept silent by Virginia Tech’s pitching staff as they mustered up just five hits. They picked up their pair of runs in the fifth inning and were kept scoreless in the other eight innings.

Only four Yellow Jackets were able to get on base via base hits on Thursday night but the Jackets did show their usual patience at the plate drawing seven walks throughout the game. That being said, their inability to get timely base hits proved to be fatal in their one-run loss. Michael Guldberg lead the Jackets at the plate going 2-for-5 while Luke Waddell and Austin Wilhite drove in the Jackets two runs.

The 3-2 loss for the Yellow Jackets was their 13th of the season and now sit at 25-13 on the season. The Yellow Jackets will look to even the series up on Friday night when they send Connor Thomas to the mound.

The loss to the Hokies is the third straight series opener the Yellow Jackets have now dropped after losing their first game to North Carolina and Boston College in the last two weeks. The good news for the Jackets is that they would go onto win both of the last two games of those series.

Despite Thursday night’s loss, the Jackets still lead the ACC Coastal with an 11-8 conference record and have a one-game lead over the North Carolina Tar Heels (10-8). A series win over Virginia Tech will be pivotal as the Jackets have a tough matchup with a top-25 Clemson next weekend.
