The Georgia Tech baseball team fell short of an ACC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon, falling to North Carolina 10-2 in the ACC Championship game.
The Georgia Tech baseball team’s luck ran out on Sunday afternoon in the ACC Tournament. The Jackets fell to the No.5 seed North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday 10-2 in the ACC Championship game. The Jackets had won their first three games of the tournament over Notre Dame, Duke, and N.C State.
Cort Roedig got the start on Sunday afternoon against the Tar Heels and pitched well in his 4.1 innings pitched. The freshman right hander allowed just one run over one hit and three walks. He was pulled in the fifth inning after notching a big strikeout.
In relief of Roedig was freshman lefty Luke Bartnicki who had a good ACC Tournament but may have been a bit tired during Sunday’s championship game. Bartnicki allowed three runs while recording two outs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings. Bartnicki ultimately ended up getting the loss but in reality, a taxed Georgia Tech bullpen just didn’t have what they needed on Sunday.
The Jackets bullpen over their 4.2 innings allowed nine runs on 11 hits and three walks. It was just a poor team performance out of the bullpen.
That being said, the Jackets bats never really came alive in Sunday’s championship game either. The North Carolina pitching staff kept the Jackets at bay all day, just allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks. It was a tremendous performance for the Tar Heels to say the least.
The good news for Georgia Tech is that the Jackets will still be holding an NCAA Regional in this year’s NCAA Tournament. The biggest question remaining about the Jackets postseason chances, however, is if the Jackets will be hosting an NCAA Super Regional. The top-8 teams will host Super Regionals. The Jackets will find if they will be doing so on Monday during the NCAA selection show.
The Jackets may not have won an ACC Tournament Championship but it was still a successful week for the Jackets. They went toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the conference and once again showed their dominance. Sunday was simply just a tired team and a tired bullpen. The Jackets will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 41-17 overall record and finished conference play with a 22-12 record.
