Miami native Khaya Wright committed to the Georgia Tech football program on Tuesday evening, becoming the Jackets second commitment of the day and 18th of their 2020 recruiting class.

The 2020 recruiting class rolls on for Georgia Tech on Tuesday evening, as the Jackets coaching staff and fans got word of the commitment of Miami defensive end Khaya Wright. Wright is unranked by 247Sports but is ranked as a three-star prospect by Rivals.

At 6-foot-3 and roughly 200-pounds, Wright will need to put on some weight if the Jackets project him to be a defensive end at the next level, that being said, Wright does have the size and would not nearly need to put on as much weight if they chose to play him at linebacker instead. That being said, he’ll have an entire year to bulk up before arriving on campus next summer if he stays committed to the program.

Wright committed to the program over offers from multiple Power 5 programs including his hometown Miami Hurricanes, other notable offers include Indiana, Louisville, Nebraska, and Virginia.

Wright could be a sleeper pickup for the Yellow Jackets per say, while Wright does have great testing numbers, a look at his highlight films show a defensive end who is aggressive, has quality length and will do whatever it takes to get to the ball carrier. Due to a lack of elite explosiveness, at least in our opinion, he will probably be better suited to play linebacker at the next level, though a potential hybrid type role could work as well. He did run a strong 40-yard dash for a defensive end but it remains to be seen if he would be able to keep such speed once he gains more weight. That projection also factors in that for a defensive end, you usually want your guys to be near the 230-250 pound mark. For now, he is one of five defensive end commitments in the Jackets class joining JaQuari Wright, Akelo Stone, Kyle Kennard and Eddie Watkins. For comparison, the Jackets have just one linebacker commitment so far, that being from Virginia native Jared Behrens.

Wright as mentioned above is commitment No.18 in the 2020 cycle for the Jackets and joins offensive tackle Wing Green as players to commit to the program on Tuesday. The Jackets currently have a top-20 recruiting class in the country.
