Today’s Georgia Tech countdown to kickoff series goes back in time to former Jacket linebacker Steven Sylvester

In the countdown to kickoff series, we go back a little way to LB Steven Sylvester who was a big locker room presence for the Yellow Jackets under Paul Johnson. He has continued his career after playing by being a graduate assistant at Tech and is currently the running backs and special teams coordinator at Jacksonville University.

Sylvester was a member of the 2008 recruiting class and signed with the Yellow Jackets after receiving offers from Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. In his career at Georgia Tech, he notched 154 total tackles including 19.5 for loss and 7 sacks.

He was an instrumental member of the 2009 ACC Championship team that defeated Clemson. His breakout season came in 2010 where he recorded 60 total tackles, 10.5 for loss and 3 sacks with 3 forced fumbles across 13 games. He also served as a team captain in 2011 for his senior season.

Sylvester graduated from Tech in 2011 with a degree in science, technology, and culture and finished his masters in 2015 in facility and property management.

Following his playing career, Sylvester became graduate assistant for the Yellow Jackets for three seasons. He then made the jump into the coaching ranks in 2015 becoming the running backs coach for Jacksonville University. In 2017 his running backs unit set school records in rushing yards, attempts and touchdowns in 2017 obliterating the previous record. He currently holds the title of running backs coach and special teams coordinator.
