As the Georgia Tech season draws closer our football preview coverage will only continue to grow as we have a lot to cover in the next month, today, we begin looking at potential breakout candidates for Georgia Tech and start with an obvious selection, senior wide receiver Jalen Camp.

A new era of Georgia Tech football is upon and with the new era will come new stars. As Georgia Tech changes their offensive scheme from a triple-option scheme to a more pro-style offense, that means there are a few potential breakout candidates on Georgia Tech’s offense.

Today, we look at one of the more obvious selections for a breakout season, that coming from senior wide receiver and No.1 Jalen Camp. Camp has been a player Tech fans have been hoping for a breakout from since he arrived on campus and 2019 may finally be his chance to do so, though it will be his last opportunity as well.

Camp is coming off his best season as a Yellow Jacket, catching 11 receptions for 186-yards. Through his first three years on campus, he has just 12 receptions for 235-yards and has yet to find the back of the end zone. Therefore, it’s safe to say that he has yet to break out during his time on The Flats.

Entering 2019, Camp is expected to be the Jackets No.1 receiver which means plenty of passes will be coming his way this upcoming season. With the potential to have upwards of 75-100 passing targets come his way over the course of the season, Camp could very well rack up 50+ catches in 2019. While it’s hard to estimate yardage, looking at a season of 750+ yards wouldn’t be shocking with that type of volume.

The breakout season for Camp is well overdue as Tech fans have only been hearing about Camp’s potential and stellar offseasons since he arrived on campus. While he never fails to impress during spring or fall practices, he has yet to have the chance to show it on the field consistently. It was certainly one of the downsides of being a potential elite receiver while playing in a triple-option offense.

In 2019, we expect Camp to breakout and in a big way. While he hasn’t been given the opportunity in the past to show it, he’s shown glimpses of what he could be if given the chance. With the ability to be a strong possession receiver but also has the speed to be a legitimate and consistent deep threat.

Camp has had the last three years of getting quality in-game seasoning and getting prepared to take that next step in his game. In 2019, it’s make or break time for Jalen Camp, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to show that he could be a No.1 receiver and now he’ll have to take the proverbial bull by the hands as he has a chance to make his mark in Georgia Tech’s offense by being one of their premier offensive weapons.

The ball is officially in Jalen’s court, will he be able to capitalize? We’ll find out starting on August 29th when the Jackets start their 2019 season off against the defending national champion Clemson Tigers.
