Georgia Tech’s Jordan Yates saw some playing time as a true freshman but his bigger impacts will have to wait until 2020 or beyond.

Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates finished up his true freshman campaign in 2019. The former four-star quarterback rose rapidly up recruiting rankings over the final months of the 2019 recruiting cycle and with that came high expectations. Some believed that Yates could potentially be a Day 1 starter for the Yellow Jackets but that proved to be probably to too much to expect. Either way, Yates future is still bright on The Flats.

On the season, Yates appeared in three games for the Yellow Jackets, all coming in the back half of the season. Yates played in the Jackets games against Duke, Virginia Tech, and Georgia. The majority of his playing time came in the Jackets game against Virginia Tech.

In that game against the Hokies, Yates completed 4-of-11 passing attempts he made for 38-yards. He also had 10 rushing attempts for 16-yards in the game. Yates also had one passing attempt against Georgia as well as one rushing attempt.

With only appearing in three games for the Yellow Jackets in 2019, Yates was able to keep his redshirt eligibility and will officially be a redshirt freshman in 2020. The extra year of development could go a long ways for Yates as he continues to develop as a quarterback both on and off the field.

Overall, while Yates didn’t play much against in 2019, the limited experience he was able to obtain in will be beneficial to his development this offseason. Despite not being a ton of experience, any level of experience at this point in his development is beneficial.

2020 Outlook:

With a likely quarterback competition set for the spring and next all for Georgia Tech, the former four-star will have a chance to land the Jackets starting quarterback job. That of course could determine a lot about Yates’s future especially in 2020. If Yates isn’t the starter, he’ll provide the Yellow Jackets with a quality backup option but with limited experience. If Yates is the starter, there certainly will be high expectations but once again the limited experience would be notable.
