Georgia Tech Football 2019 in Review: LB Demetrius Knight II
Converted quarterback Demetrius Knight II showed a lot of promise in his first year on The Flats as a linebacker.
A three-star quarterback recruit coming out of high school, Georgia Tech’s Demetrius Knight made the switch to linebacker last year when he enrolled on The Flats. While not an easy position switch by any means, the switch is one that is seen quite a bit in football including North Carolina’s Chazz Suratt who racked up 100+ tackles this year in his first year at linebacker.
While Knight didn’t rack up 100 tackles this season, he did show some quality abilities at the position. On the season, Knight played in 10 games for the Yellow Jackets and recorded 17 tackles including two tackles for a loss and one sack. He also recorded one forced fumble and two pass breakups on the season. In his ten games played, Knight recorded at least one tackle in eight of those games. Overall, his best game of the season came against Duke when he recorded six total tackles.
Knight’s biggest play of the season came against the Miami Hurricanes. Knight, on the play, blitzed Miami quarterback N’Kosi Perry on 3rd and 7 with the Hurricanes pinned deep in their own territory. Knight was able to get to Perry in the end zone with a strip sack, the ball would be recovered by the Yellow Jackets to give them a 7-0 lead in the game.
Overall, for someone who made the permanent switch from quarterback to linebacker while also transitioning from high school to college, Knight’s first season on The Flats was really promising. He showed flashes at linebacker of a player who could be a game changer at the position down the line for the Yellow Jackets.
2020 Outlook:
With a few season under his belt at linebacker, Knight enters his first offseason as a linebacker which could prove to be a huge point in his development. 2020 could be a really interesting season for Knight depending on his development. Knight should see more playing time in 2020 and will most likely have a bigger role on the defense. Personally, Knight will be one Yellow Jacket we keep a very close eye on in 2020.
