The Georgia Tech baseball team on Sunday afternoon suffered their first setback of the 2020 season in an 11-1 loss to the St. John’s Red Storm.

After picking up wins over St. Peter’s and Cincinnati in their first two games of the season, the Georgia Tech baseball team suffered their first loss of the 2020 season. The Jackets fell to the Big East’s St. John’s Red Storm at Russ Chandler Stadium by a final score of 11-1.

Sophomore right hander Cort Roedig got the start for the Yellow Jackets looking to carry over his success from last year’s postseason. It would be a tough start for Roedig, however, as he would allow four earned runs and six total in just 3.2 innings of work. He allowed four hits and two walks during his short time on the mound while also striking out six.

After Roedig left the game, the Yellow Jackets bullpen worked hard over 6.1 innings. Six different Yellow Jackets came out of the bullpen during that time. Freshman righty Jackson Finley was hit around the most in the game, allowing four earned runs on three hits in his first career appearance.

Offensively, the Jackets never woke up their bats and were able to only rack up five hits throughout the game. Against St. John’s starter Ian Murphy, the Jackets managed just two hits over five innings and struck out nine times. The Jackets didn’t do much better against St. John’s bullpen, getting just three hits and one run off a trio of Red Storm relievers.

For their five hits on Sunday, only three different Yellow Jackets recorded hits. SS Luke Waddell went 1-for-3 at the plate while LF Michael Guldberg and DH Andrew Jenkins both recorded 2-for-4 performances at the plate. Waddell also recorded one of the Jackets four walks on the afternoon.

Player of the Game:

Our player(s) of the game for the Yellow Jackets is the combination of Michael Guldberg and Andrew Jenkins. In a game where nobody in the Jackets lineup really had it offensively, Guldberg and Jenkins provided as much as they could going a combined 4-for-8 at the plate on Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets will need to turn around fast and get past their first stumble of the season. They’ll be traveling down the road to Statesboro on Tuesday for a matchup against the Georgia Southern Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
